If your Apple ID settings are showing "iPhone (2)" or similar numbered device tags, your system is likely recognizing the same phone twice due to a recent restore, factory reset, or backup transfer. You can easily fix this by renaming your device in your settings and cleaning up your connected devices list.To resolve the duplicate naming, open your device's Settings, tap General, and select About.
At the top of the screen, tap Name, delete the "(2)," and hit Done. For the change to sync immediately, sign out of your Apple ID in the main settings menu and sign back in, or simply perform a quick force restart. Once your phone is correctly named, you should also review the active devices linked to your account to ensure there are no redundant or unauthorized sessions.
On your iPhone, navigate to Settings, tap your name profile, and scroll down to view the connected devices list. If you see old, duplicate, or unfamiliar entries, select the outdated device and tap Remove from Account. For more granular control, or if you do not currently have your phone nearby, you can log into Apple Account on any web browser.
From the Devices tab, click View Details, then Remove from Account to securely erase any ghosts of old devices or duplicate listings. If these duplicate listings are stubbornly persisting or causing issues with your Apple services, Apple users on the Apple Support Community generally agree that force-closing the Settings app, restarting the iPhone, or reviewing the serial numbers on the Apple ID website usually uncovers the true root of the duplication.
Taking the time to clear out these orphaned or duplicate registrations guarantees your iCloud sync, Find My, and messaging services run perfectly in the background without any technical confusion.
