To manage the Always-On Display on your iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max, simply navigate to your Settings app, tap Display & Brightness, scroll down, and toggle the Always On switch on or off. By default, this feature is enabled, letting you check your widgets and notifications without fully waking the device.
The Always-On Display (AOD) on these devices works by utilizing advanced OLED technology, which dynamically reduces the screen's refresh rate down to just 1 Hz to conserve power while displaying a dimmed version of your lock screen. Apple built this feature to be remarkably intelligent; the screen will automatically go completely black if you place your device face down, put it in a pocket or bag, walk away with a paired Apple Watch, or activate Sleep Focus.
While Apple designed AOD to have minimal impact on your battery, some users prefer to turn it off completely to maximize battery life or eliminate screen distractions. To toggle the feature ON or OFF manually, you only need to access your primary Settings menu, scroll down and tap Display & Brightness, then locate the Always On option and adjust the toggle switch to your preferred state.
When the feature is switched OFF, locking your iPhone will result in a perfectly dark screen, exactly like older models, until you deliberately wake it by tapping the screen, lifting the phone, or pressing the side button.
Additionally, you can customize your Always-On experience without fully disabling it; within the same Always On settings submenu, you can choose whether or not to show your background wallpaper or specific notifications on the dimmed screen, tailoring the feature to your personal workflow and daily battery needs.
